NEW YORK – If you walk into the visitors’ clubhouse at Yankee Stadium and look to the right just as you come through the door, you will see that the top of the first locker on the row looks sort of broken.

Every other locker has a uniformly smooth facing with a dark number plate right in the middle, but the first locker appears shabby:

The paint around the number plate is a very different shade of white, and it almost looks like someone ripped a chunk out of the locker and then tried to re-finish it hurriedly.

This is because that is exactly what happened. At the end of the Red Sox’s final series at the Stadium last month, the Yankees’ clubhouse attendants cut out the top of the locker and the No. 49 plate, and gave it to Boston pitcher Tim Wakefield as a souvenir. Wakefield joined the Red Sox in 1995 and had changed at that locker for every series the two teams played in New York ever since.

“He’d been coming here the most years of any active player,” visiting clubhouse manager Lou Cucuzza said. Then Cucuzza laughed. “This season we’ve gotten a lot of requests from guys who want to take things.”

Most don’t involve carpentry repairs. During the final season at Yankee Stadium the most common request from visiting players making their last trip has been simply the number plates that identify each locker; typically, Cucuzza said, he re-uses the plates when one team leaves and another arrives. This year, many visiting players have been asking to take theirs with them, meaning he’s had to make new ones each series.

As far as requests go, though, the number plates are pretty tame. Cucuzza and his brother, Rob, the home clubhouse manager, have also been compiling a list of requests for Stadium pieces from Yankees players. Most popular are the roofs atop the home lockers, which look like miniature Stadium facades, but there have also been a couple of more outrageous inquiries: Johnny Damon has asked for the right- and left-field foul poles while Mike Mussina would like to take home the Stadium’s flagpole.

Ultimately, the city (as overseer of the Stadium’s deconstruction) will determine what happens to the Stadium’s various pieces, but with the final game tonight, keepsakes from the 85-year-old park have become a repeated topic.

What makes the perfect memento? Seats are the obvious selection but the truth is that the best items are the ones that inspire images in your mind’s eye; a spark to a day or a game or a play that will always resonate. As impressive as a particular piece of Stadium paraphernalia might be, without some personal attachment it is little more than kitsch. It’s the same rationale for why autographs gotten in person are always better than one bought off eBay or in a memorabilia store: The tale of how the signature was procured always means more than the scrawled letters themselves. In the case of the Stadium, Yankee tag sale items with emotional significance should be most coveted.

That’s why Robert Kurkela, an author from New City, wants a piece of the blue padded outfield wall. Kurkela and two of his brothers sat in the left-field stands for Game 5 of the 1976 ALCS, when Chris Chambliss hit a series-winning home run and fans stormed the field.

Kurkela joined the fray, his brothers lowering him down because it was a long leap from the stands for a 9-year-old to make. He remembers watching fans grabbing everything – dirt, grass, bases, whatever – and then walking off through an opening in the left-field wall. One fan had literally ripped off a long piece of the padding, and Kurkela can still see the fan lugging the wall away, the blue rectangle towering over the man who carried it.

“So I don’t know if that is something I could buy, but if I could, it would always remind me of that day,” Kurkela said recently. “It’d be great if it had a number on it. Like the 3 from the 314 in right field.”

Another longtime fan, Janet Bruno of Harrison, is going to tonight’s game and said she will take the time to walk the concourses of the Stadium before first pitch. Many of her memories from the Stadium are from the bleachers, where she sat for so many games, though she is also one of the few people to have sat in the “black” bleachers section in center field.

“It was when Pope John Paul II came in 1979 and I still have the pamphlet,” she said. “Right now if you try to sit out there you get escorted out by the police.”

Bruno would love to take home a section of the bleachers to add to her collection of tickets (she has a New York Giants-Washington Redskins one from 1961, when the Giants played at the Stadium) and other memorabilia. “That would be perfect,” she said.

Seems like everyone wants something, a piece of history to call their own. It does not matter who you are: visiting players, Yankees and fans alike just want to be able to touch something from the most storied park around. It almost does not matter what. Foul poles and flagpoles and dirt and seats and even a padded wall. They are novelties, to be sure, but they are also reminders. They are reassurances that you can always hold on to the memories.

TAMPA – Gail Appel showed me one of her company’s biggest files, that of New York Yankee Derek Jeter.

“I remember I asked him to sign every card that I could find, which he did. I told Wendy to do the same,” Appel recalled with a hint of a tear in her eye.

In the mounds of paperwork, priceless memories of a woman she described as more than just a friend. Her partner of thirteen years at their interior “Designing Women” business, Wendy Albano.

“We were the only friends we knew at the time. We were always together. It was like being Siamese twins. In fact, we were born on the very same day. I guess some people would say it was not healthy to be so close, but she completed me,” Appel said.

The day she learned Albano died, Thai authorities said she was found stabbed and strangled in her upscale Bangkok hotel room, her heart sank.

“You hear about these kind of things on national news. Not to someone you were so close to. And someone who was so loving and so kind,” Appel said.

The women met more than 20 years ago. Appel said their clients included the elite, from the owner of Rooms to Go, to former pro baseball player Tino Martinez, and New York Yankee Derek Jeter. They did the interior design work for Jeter’s Avila home and his Manhattan condo.

“During the entire time we were business partners, we never argued — not once! That is saying something when you are with someone all the time for thirteen years,” Appel said.

But then, their friendship began to unravel. Appel said their lives took two different paths. Appel is still married. Albano was now single.

“She has a different set of friends now. Friends that are so wonderful, but our lives are so different, maybe that is why we grew apart,” Appel said. “Our daughters are still extremely close. We each have two and they are very similar ages. In fact, Wendy was the godmother of both my girls.”

She won’t speculate on the relationship her friend had with her alleged killer: Authorities say a man of Indian descent was caught on camera leaving her hotel room the night before and then leaving and last seen in the airport, heading to his native India. He has not been found.

“It would not be fair for me to speculate on her personal life. But she never saw the bad in anyone. She was so trusting,” Appel said. “The biggest regret in my life is not being able to capture that closeness with her again and I don’t think she knew that. She was a part of me.”

According to a tweet the other night by Buster Olney, the Philadelphia Phillies attempted to trade pitcher Joe Blanton to the Los Angeles Angels for OF/DH Bobby Abreu, then planned to flip Abreu to the New York Yankees for A.J. Burnett.

My first thought was how much cash would the Phillies have wanted the Yankees to kick in to cover Burnett’s much larger salary? I tweeted Olney asking if the Phillies would have eaten Burnett’s contract. (Hey, you never know with Ruben Amaro Jr.). He replied that the Phillies were also looking to have the Yankees fork over some dollars. I presume to the Phillies would have liked to equal out the salaries.

@Buster_ESPN Would Philly have eaten all the money owed Burnett over what Abreu made?

— Joseph DelGrippo (@JosephDelGrippo) February 20, 2012

@JosephDelGrippo No, they were looking for the Yankees to make a $ adjustment, as well.

— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) February 20, 2012

That would have been about the same money the Yankees are eating by trading Burnett to the Pittsburgh Pirates, but would cost the Yankees more for their salary structure by having Abreu on the roster. Since the Yankees tried to trade Burnett to the Angels directly for Abreu, it appears they believed the former Yankee was worth the extra money for the 2012 season.

That attempted direct trade by the Yankees and Angels was killed by Burnett, who used his partial no-trade clause to veto going to the West Coast. According to this report, this was due to a fear of flying by A.J.’s wife. That appears legitimate. One clause in A.J.’s contract with the Toronto Blue Jays was eight round-trip limousine trips per season between Toronto and Maryland (Burnett’s home) for A.J.’s wife. That is more than one trip per month of the season and quite a long ride. Only reason to endure a long ride like that is if you are afraid of flying.

A.J. has no such clause in his current contract.

Also, it appears the Angels did not think Blanton was worth giving up Abreu. If so, it was a good call by them.

Going to the Phillies would have been great for Burnett. He would be a much closer ride to his Maryland home, allowed him to be with fellow Arkansas native Cliff Lee (both are friends and have the same agent), and most importantly, given him a better opportunity to pitch in another World Series.

Conspiracy question just for fun’s sake: did the Angles not do the Blanton/Abreu/Burnett three-way swap because A.J. nixed the straight up Burnett for Abreu deal?

But even though the trades never materialized, if they really wanted Bobby back in pinstripes could they have expanded the trade to get the Angels to agree on taking Blanton? Would the Yankees have been better off with Abreu and his $9 million salary, or the recently signed Raul Ibanez and his $1.1 million salary?

Both former Phillies outfielders are coming off down seasons, arguably the worst of their careers.

Abreu slashed a .253/.353/.365/.717 line for the season and was a little better (primarily his SLG) against RHP with a .259/.366/.400/.766 line. Ibanez slashed a .245/.289/.419/.707 line for the season and was also a little better against RHP with a .256/.307/.440/.747 line.

Not much of a difference in OPS when facing right-handers, with Abreu giving you much more of an OBP while Ibanez likely gives a team more power. While Abreu should hit a few more HRs in Yankees Stadium, it won’t be much more. Abreu has always been the higher OBP guy, usually a full hundred points over his batting average.

But is that worth about $8 million more per season? I don’t think so.

Each guy would be used primarily against RHP and should generate about 350 PA for the 2012 season. Abreu might get more PAs since he is still adept at generating free passes from LHP, but since Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter are going to be given half days once a week, Abreu would still sit the bench most times a RHP starts the game.

Based upon Abreu’s OBP against RHP last season, 350 PAs gets him on base 129 times, while Ibanez’ OBP would get him on base 108 times. Assuming similar power numbers for each player from last year, would 21 more times on base by Abreu be worth $8 million more dollars? That would be 21 times on base over approximately 110 or so starts as designated hitter.

I don’t think so. When you break down the amount of times a part time player gets on base over another player, I would always go for the better power guy and higher slugging percentage. So I have to ask why the Yankees even tried to trade A.J. for Abreu when Ibanez and other lefty DH types were already out there and available?

It turns out Burnett’s wife’s fear of the friendly skies led to the Yankees making the better move, but it might have cost her and her husband another chance at a World Series.

Ibanez and the Yankees agreed to a $1.1 million, one-year contract, a person familiar the negotiations said Monday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical. It includes $2.9 million in performance bonuses.

“He’s a guy that’s hit right-handers very well over his career, can still play the outfield,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said, without confirming the agreement. “Has been a productive player if you look over the last 10 years.”

Ibanez is a 39-year-old outfielder who played with Philadelphia the last three seasons and hit .245 last year with 20 homers and 84 RBIs.

With a swing that seems tailored to the short right-field at Yankee Stadium, Ibanez is expected to be the Yankees’ primary designated hitter against right-handed starting pitchers. New York decided on him over Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui, who also are free agents.

The agreement came one day after the Yankees traded Burnett to Pittsburgh, a deal in which the Pirates pay $5 million of the pitcher’s salary this year and $8 million in 2013.

New York also has an offer out to re-sign backup INF Eric Chavez.

TAMPA, Fla. – On the day the New York Yankees made themselves the American League favorites, their ace, CC Sabathia, was driving from his New Jersey home into Manhattan when his phone rang. An excited voice greeted him and immediately spit out the good news: The Yankees had traded for hard-throwing 23-year-old Michael Pineda and were about to sign veteran right-hander Hiroki Kuroda. With two moves inside of an hour, the Yankees had turned their greatest weakness into a decided strength.

“You know who called me? Alex,” Sabathia said. “A-Rod called me and told me we had made the trade. He was just excited. ‘We made the trade. We got you some help.’ ”

Around the same time, Pineda’s phone rang. It was Jack Zduriencik, the Seattle Mariners’ general manager who had dealt Pineda and prospect Jose Campos for 22-year-old slugger Jesus Montero and pitcher Hector Noesi, the old-school, kid-for-kid trade so many GMs are afraid to pull these days. Zduriencik tried to tell Pineda he was going to New York. Pineda, still learning English, said he didn’t understand.

“I’m nervous,” Pineda said. “He pass the phone to the translator. I said, ‘Oh my God.’ I said, ‘It’s not real. It’s not real. The Yankees?’ ”

Yes, the Yankees. Of course the Yankees, actually. No other team imports big-talent pitchers with such regularity, with such high hopes, with all of the complications that accompany wearing pinstripes. The failure of outsiders has taken on a mythical status in New York and become something of a self-fulfilling prophecy: If you’re not a Yankee, it’s awfully difficult to come in mid-career and play to their standards.

The latest casualty, A.J. Burnett, was shipped out of town Sunday night with $18 million and a press release that highlighted his three seasons with the Yankees by detailing his propensity to throw wild pitches. They didn’t just toss him into the Harlem River. They fitted him for a pair of cement shoes first.

Whether it’s Burnett, Javier Vazquez, Carl Pavano, Kevin Brown or Kenny Rogers, the legacy of Yankee pitching saviors in the Joe Torre-and-Joe Girardi Era is indeed sordid. In those 15 years, the team has brought in 21 major-league pitchers who spent a significant portion of their time as Yankees in the starting rotation. Only three have pitched better in New York than they did in their other stops.

Sabathia is the best example. Since signing the richest deal ever for a pitcher in 2008, he has dropped his ERA nearly half a run from his time in Cleveland and Milwaukee. His adjusted ERA – a number that compares his ERA to the league average and factors in whether his home stadium is a hitters’ or pitchers’ park – is 140, or 40 percent better than average, compared to 120 over his first eight seasons.

The other two: David Wells, who thrived in New York, and Freddy Garcia, who has pitched one overachieving season with the Yankees. And that’s it.

Roger Clemens? His Yankees ERA, 4.01, was more than a point higher than with Boston, Toronto and Houston, and his ERA+ 47 points lower.

Mike Mussina? Better as an Oriole.

Randy Johnson? Medium Unit at best.

Even David Cone and Jimmy Key, two linchpins from the dynasty teams, were no better with the Yankees than anywhere else. Cone’s ERA swelled and his ERA+ is a smidgen lower with the Yankees. Key’s ERA was about a quarter-point higher, while his ERA+ was a tiny bit better.

Jon Lieber, Shawn Chacon, Jaret Wright, Bartolo Colon – all maintained, some at higher levels than others.

The international players haven’t faired well, either, with Orlando Hernandez’s success offset by Hideki Irabu, Kei Igawa and Jose Contreras’ struggles.

“Everyone talks about how much pressure it is coming to play here,” Sabathia said. “I think it actually takes the pressure off. Look at the guys you’ve got around you. I love it. I love pitching in the Bronx. Nobody could put more pressure on me than I do myself.”

Sabathia’s circumstances were different than a majority of players on the list. He arrived still in his prime. Sidney Ponson, Johnson, Brown, Dwight Gooden and Key arrived toward the end of their careers. But Rogers and Denny Neagle were 31, Pavano 29, Vazquez 27 and Jeff Weaver 25. Plenty more arrived at Yankee Stadium with promising careers and left broken.

To see the Yankees’ newest duo is a study in contrasts: the massive kid – Pineda’s pitching coach last season, Carl Willis, called him a right-handed Sabathia, and the 6-foot-7, 290-pound Sabathia himself calls Pineda “big dog” – and Kuroda, the slight old hand who matches Pineda’s upside with security and consistency. Even if history pegs both likelier to bomb out rather than plateau, the Yankees gambling on upside while bringing in an insurance policy in Kuroda plays as the ultimate hedge, a beautiful curlicue of strategy from ever-wily GM Brian Cashman.

The Yankees stuck Pineda’s locker next to Sabathia’s in hopes that some of his wisdom would rub off. If he happens to impart into Pineda some newcomer pixie dust, the Yankees won’t argue. He won’t be the only one bobbing for knowledge, either.

“He’s definitely someone I’ll talk with,” the 37-year-old Kuroda said. “I know there have been many pitchers in the past who haven’t had success, but I don’t have that many years left in me as a professional baseball player. I’ve always wanted to challenge myself. So that’s one of the reasons I chose the Yankees. I know there’s a big risk. At the same time, this is a huge opportunity. I want that big risk.”

For four years, Kuroda thrived with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He, too, had faced inevitable comparisons to those not necessarily like him: other Japanese pitchers. His predecessors’ lack of long-term achievement – those who did pitch well tended to do so for only a few years – birthed the stereotype that Japanese pitchers imploded quickly. Kuroda blew up that pigeonhole right quick.

This one … well, this one is far bigger, the sort of whirlpool that can suck under even good pitchers. When Vazquez escaped New York’s clutches, he started dealing again. Pavano rescued his career. Rogers flourished. Burnett could be the latest.

It could be mental. It could be physical. Or both. If there were a secret to pitching for the Yankees, Major League Baseball would put it on its banned-substance list instantaneously because too many would go ravenous for it. Such are the spoils for being one of the few and proud who turn New York into a personal playground.

“It looks easy from the outside,” said Ivan Nova, who went 16-4 with a 3.70 ERA last year as a rookie. “It’s not. You try to be calm, but I don’t think it’s possible.”

So he’ll go about his worrying with Sabathia, Kuroda, Pineda and Garcia or Phil Hughes or whoever else takes the fifth starter spot. They’ll try to hold off Tampa Bay and its deep rotation, Boston with a three-headed monster atop its rotation, even Toronto, whose starters’ pure stuff rivals the other three groups.

“We have the best staff in the division,” Sabathia said. “I’m not going to shy away from that.”

In other words, screw history. Sabathia flipped it the bird, and he fully expects Pineda and Kuroda to do the same. These are the Yankees, and they should be better than Burnett and Vazquez and Pavano and Brown and Rogers. If the new guys can make the exception the new rule, Sabathia’s right: It will be the best staff in the division. And the AL pennant won’t be the only thing they win.

BRADENTON, Fla. — A.J. Burnett departed his Maryland home Saturday for Florida, though his exact destination remained unclear.

Once he received a call from Pirates general manager Neal Huntington and manager Clint Hurdle, his route solidified. Endpoint: Bradenton.

“It’s going to be a fresh start, it’s going to be fun,” Burnett said Monday outside of the Pirates spring training facility, his first day in black and yellow after he was acquired from the New York Yankees. “Coming back to the National League where I can hit and bunt. Get the joy back into the game.”

Burnett experienced the joy of winning a World Series with the Yankees in 2009, his first season with the team. Since then, he struggled on the mound and eventually found himself one of the odd men out in a crowded rotation.

“I put more pressure on myself than anyone else does,” he said. “It was fun the first couple years. Then it got more of, am I ever going to get out of this funk? Now I have a chance to. Open arms right now. I’m accepting all this. It’s great.”

Burnett’s seven innings of one-run ball in Game 2 of the 2009 World Series played a large role in helping the Yankees win the title, and his start in Game 4 of the ’11 American League division series kept the Yankees alive.

“I have no regrets,” he said. “I got my ring there. I got to play with teammates that are a lot of people won’t get to play with — Hall of Famers.”

Burnett’s performance declined in the next two seasons, when he went 21-26 with a 5.20 ERA. He threw more wild pitches last season than anyone else in the league and hit more batters in ’10 than any other pitcher.

“Without getting too far into it, I let a few too many people tinker with me, maybe,” he said. “When you let that happen, you get out there, you start doubting yourself at times.

“I’m not one to lie and point fingers. Did I produce during the season? No. Did I have good games when they needed? Yeah.”

After the Yankees traded for Michael Pineda and signed free agent Hiroki Kuroda this offseason, Huntington capitalized on the oversized Yankees rotation.

“We felt comfortable with our rotation,” Huntington said. “We felt comfortable with our depth. This makes us better.”

The Cleveland Indians were rumored to have interest in Burnett, as were the Los Angeles Angels, but neither came to fruition. Burnett, whose no-trade clause reportedly prohibits trades to teams on the West Coast, said he wanted to stay near his family in Maryland.

He joked with a smile about the stories citing his wife’s disaffection with flying as the reason not to play on the West Coast: “My wife flies everywhere. Can I just say that real quick?”

Now Burnett will face a National League Central Division lacking Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder rather than the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays of the American League East, and he will do so in PNC Park instead of Yankee Stadium, a favorable hitting environment.

“We want players that can be successful in New York and Boston and all big-market places because the traits that will allow them to be successful there will allow them to be successful anywhere,” Huntington said. “At the same time there are some guys that just [need] change of scenery. It’s not necessarily getting out of New York; you just need to get out of where you were. It just wasn’t working.”

Burnett said he plans to lead by example, the way he and Roy Halladay did with the Toronto Blue Jays years ago.

“I’m not a cheerleader with pom-poms, I’m not going to have a ‘C’ on my chest, but I know right and wrong,” he said.

Huntington said the Pirates still had payroll flexibility after assuming $13 million of Burnett’s contract over the next two seasons.

“There are limits coming up in what we can spend in signing bonuses, both internationally and in the draft,” Huntington said. “The money’s going to go back into the club in some way, shape or form.”

The Pirates put shortstop Gustavo Nunez on the 60-day disabled list Monday because of a right ankle injury.

The move cleared a spot on the 40-man roster for Burnett.

The Pirates selected Nunez, 24, from the Detroit Tigers organization in the Dec. 8 Rule 5 draft. He hit .276 in a 2011 season split between Class A and AA.

Chris Resop and Ramon Cabrera worked out with the team. Resop missed a workout Sunday because of the stomach flu and travel delays kept Cabrera from making a connecting flight from Venezuela.

Burnett will wear No. 34. Daniel McCutchen, who had No. 34, switched to 25. … Charlie Morton (hip surgery) threw a bullpen session and is ahead of schedule, Hurdle said.
